Counseling & Psychotherapy

Contextual Counseling, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Prepare/Enrich Marital Therapy, Mindfullness, and More

We offer proven methods to improve the critical qualities of attention, self-awareness, social intuition, sensitivity to context, emotional regulation, and resilience.

We are in a new world. The internet is speeding life beyond our understanding and control. Children have multiple sources of information, many beyond your understanding and control. Cognitive work has largely replaced physical work. Leading by fear degrades cognitive performance. Autonomy, Mastery and Purpose are the incentives that inspire. We help you understand this new world, your place in it, and give you, and those you care about, the flexible and adaptive minds to live, love, and work well.

Contextual Counseling

Contextual Counseling

Behavior without context is meaningless. The first thing to understand is that our brains are designed for survival. Happiness is optional. Truth is optional (sad, but true). Our brains are literally in a state of biologically induced hypnosis the first seven years of life, unconsciously learning the good, bad, and ugly of how to survive and fit within our family and community. Our natural guiding intuitions can be overridden by years of social conditioning. In stressful situations, primitive impulses can trigger and hijack our ability to make calm decisions. By the time we are 35 years old, 95% of our mental functioning is driven by non-conscious processes. We end up blaming ourselves too easily for things that go wrong whether they are within our control or beyond our control. We get stuck in counterproductive behavioral loops. Better Minds Group helps you understand how behavior can go wrong. We then help you stimulate healthy growth from the inside out. In addition, are constantly striving to add to our repetoire to offer you the best opportunities for meaningful growth.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive behavioral therapy, popularly known as CBT, is a scientifically and clinically-backed treatment for a wide variety of mental health issues, from anxiety and depression to eating disorders and substance abuse. Central to CBT is the idea that our learned patterns of thinking and acting are sometimes dysfunctional. However, just as these patterns are learned, they can be unlearned. At Better Minds Group, we will help you learn to recognize, understand, and change these dysfunctional thoughts and behaviors. CBT methods help to break the vicious cycle of negative beliefs, distressing, painful feelings, and unhelpful behaviors. Focusing on practical, personal solutions to your problems, we will equip you with the tools to understand and challenge the patterns that keep you feeling stuck and make positive changes in your life.

"I came to Dr. Barkett less than a year ago after years of cognitive behavioral therapy with various therapists to deal with depression. I was frustrated and not getting better. In less than a year, Dr. Barkett has guided me to understand and resolve the depression, uncover the cause of the depression which had been repressed all my life, and now deal with the issue so that I can begin to find happiness and contentment in my life. I’m a work in progress but with the incredible skills and compassion of Dr. Barkett, I now have goals and a plan for my future. I have been consistently able to see improvement in my brain’s ability to slow down the out of control thoughts, focus better on the work that needs done, and transition to positive thoughts. Each session has been an opportunity for growth and discovery." -D.

Prepare/Enrich Marital Therapy

Prepare/Enrich is an evidence-based program that assesses your personality and relationship dynamics in order to build a better understanding of yourself and of your partner. At Better Minds Group, we guide you to establish the healthy communication that is the foundation of a healthy, fulfilling relationship.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness can be understood most simply as self-awareness. The practice of mindfulness has its roots in ancient Buddhist meditation techniques, but it has become quite popular in the modern world, and for good reason. Becoming more aware of your own thinking requires practice and discipline, but it has been shown to facilitate emotion regulation, calmness, focus, relationship satisfaction, and better overall quality of life. At Better Minds Group, we incorporate mindfulness techniques in order to help you stop struggling and cultivate a more calm, accepting, and aware presence.
